How to Safely Camp with Your Pet

3 minutes

Let’s face it, our pets are our furbabies and we hate to leave them home alone for long periods of time when traveling; camping is no exception. Much like our children, felines and canines also need a well thought out action plan to ensure their comfort, safety and well being while away from home.

If you are able to get your pet introduced to traveling early on, this will help their camping experience tremendously. Introducing them to your car rides when they are young will get them used to the idea of being in the car or RV. If you are starting with an older pet, be sure to take your pet on some road trips before you leave for camping. Start off with small trips around your neighborhood and lengthen each drive over time. After the trip, praise their ride with positive feedback and treats so they understand road trips are associated with positive responses from you. Do not leave your pet alone in the car and never let your pet hang his head out the window as it can be a very dangerous situation.

Packing for your pet is also much like packing for your children. Remember to include toys, blankets, a bed and treats so he feels at home during the excursion. Be sure to pack a First Aid kit that includes flea and tic protection, tweezers, ointment and bandages. In your pet’s traveling pack should also be a portable bowl for water and food that can be easy to store when not in use.

Once you have arrived to your campsite, you are most likely going to be tempted to have your pet outside with you. A roaming pet can be at risk for all types of outdoor danger. If your cat is roaming free or even on a leash without supervision, he can easily be nabbed by a hawk, coyote, fox or many other predators that would consider your kitty a feline feast! Keep your cat or small dog safe in an outdoor pet enclosure; but never leave your pet
